Hurricane Sandy is on course to hit the East Coast and more specifically Westchester County in the coming days. This is a good time to begin reviewing your personal and family emergency plans.
Hurricanes bring heavy rains, storm surges, and possible flooding events. Avoid walking or driving through any flooded areas – it takes only six inches of fast-moving flood water to knock over an adult and two feet to move a vehicle. Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
Plan to stay home during the height of the storm. If you must drive, use caution. Be aware of road and bridge washouts and storm debris on roadways. Avoid loose or dangling wires and report them immediately to the proper authorities. Assume that all downed wires are alive with electricity. Continue reading
