Going through the application process can be somewhat intimidating usually due to the fact you have to meet a bunch of new people, and the process is fairly lengthy. We are happy to announce a new series of posts to help answer many questions members of the community may have about the Armonk Fire Department. What we do, how you can join, and the overall process. Over the next few weeks we will share stories from members and follow them through the application process, and training to becoming an Interior Firefighter or EMT.
We start the series by hearing from one of our newer members about what he went through as he thought about joining, and a little bit about what it’s like to be a member.
I don’t recall the first person who suggested that I join the Fire Department, but having lived here since September of 2009, it came more frequently than one might expect. The more I started to consider the possibility the more I started to ask questions. I, like most, have a very full schedule, and I worried that I would not have the time to devote to the FD in a way that honored such a commitment. There were also other things to consider, like: I have no idea how to do anything related to fighting fires, how could I learn all that I need to know?, What about my family?, and Do I really want to shave my beard? But the more I checked into this calling the more I felt it was a way I could offer myself to my community. Continue reading
